Seven Mary Three was a college band that had the good fortune to get "Cumbersome," a track from their self-produced CD CHURN, played on Orlando, Florida's WJRR, the same radio station that "broke" Collective Soul, among others. AMERICAN STANDARD is a re-recording of the entire CHURN collection with two additional tracks, and it proves that Seven Mary Three is a band to watch.
Although they are often compared to the mighty Pearl Jam, the differences between the two are considerable. Seven Mary Three takes a rootsier approach to their music. The eleven tracks on AMERICAN STANDARD are evenly divided between straight "story songs" and those with image-laden poetry. Such musings are consistently supported by a musical bed of rhythmically flailing guitars and over-the-top drumming. Jason Ross' rage-and-pain-filled vocals careen between growling and howling.

  • Critic Reviews
Q (7/96, p.124) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Jason Ross howls as if infused with the collective spirit of J. Mascis and Eddie Vedder....Jason Pollock is the star, tucking in some spindly but loud and always melodious guitar to provide Seven Mary Three's unique selling point..."
