The Great American Regional Breakout phenomenon returns, with Columbus, Ohio school chums O.A.R. experiencing the fruits of their constant touring in Billboard chart success. They play with a confidence that belies their relative lack of experience, with echoes of both the Dave Matthews Band and Barenaked Ladies combining with their commercial white-boy reggae to produce a sound that's uniquely theirs.
ANY TIME NOW, a live set from Washington's 9.30 club, which includes material from their previous three albums, is a great introduction to their user-friendly college rock/reggae, which even includes a stab at Bob Marley's "Stir It Up" amid the catchy originals. Though no-one could accuse O.A.R. of ground-breaking originality, it's equally true that nobody ever went broke overestimating American college kids' appetites for good-time, feel-good Caribbean rhythms with a big rock backbeat. Especially on cuts like the hazy, fun-packed "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker," O.A.R. are more than happy to oblige.
