One of the earliest independent labels in Manchester following the impact of punk, but also arguably the most obscure over time, Object Music, founded by Spherical Objects leader Steve Solamar to release his band's work, had completely disappeared from formal circulation after he wrapped up the label in 1981. The sole exception to this disappearance was the Passage's earliest work, which LTM re-released in 2002. Six years later, LTM was able to do a full retrospective on the label's releases, covering not only a slew of individual albums but creating this overview, pulling together a variety of album tracks and otherwise unavailable single and compilation songs as a handy starting point for the curious. Spherical Objects themselves are represented by single tracks not otherwise included on their album reissues, starting the collection with the label's first release, "The Kill" and "The Knot," two spiky but also strangely romantic songs that have Solamar's atypical voice as the central element. Solamar appears solo as well as in the Alternomen Unlimited and Noyes Brothers partnerships with Steve Miro, who himself also appears with and without his backing band the Eyes. With a calmer voice than Solamar and an ear for gently peppy numbers like the melodica-touched "Dreams of Desire" and "Smiling in Reverse," at points Miro's work almost predates classic C-86-style indie pop, if with a crisper edge to its rushed air and recording limitations. The other band to get predominantly featured, Grow Up, in some ways split the difference between the work of the two Steves (given membership crossover with Spherical Objects, it's no real surprise), but with their own touches like the sax on "Stay Awake" and "Joanne" they kick up their heels enjoyably enough. The Passage make an understandable appearance with "Troops Out" and "My One Request," while beyond that a small selection of near total obscurities fills out the disc, with two cuts from Contact, featuring Fall/Passage veteran Tony Friel, and one each from Manchester Mekon, IQ Zero, and Warriors, an Object roster collaboration in an instrumental reggae vein. In all, while Object's oeuvre is enjoyable rather than crucial, but there's still enough quality material here to reward attention. ~ Ned Raggett
