    Less than a year after issuing 2005's SHINE, Trey Anastasio unveiled BAR 17, the former Phish frontman's first release on his own Rubber Jungle Records. Residing in the territory somewhere between the concise, pop-oriented tunes of SHINE and Anastasio's more improvisational compositions, the album is a relatively loose and limber set that ranges from the groove-heavy, Phish-like "Host Across the Potomac" to the gentle, string-laden title track to the funky, orchestral "Cincinnati," which recalls jazz bassist/composer Charles Mingus's early-1970s work. Joining the Vermont-based singer/guitarist is a typically accomplished cast of musicians that includes keyboardist John Medeski, violinist Joan Wasser, and bassist Mike Gordon (his fellow ex-Phish-mate), collaborators that intuitively add to Anastasio's adventurous and always-engaging material.
