Released in 2000 in tandem with the noisier album TOTAL SYTEM FAILURE, Juliana Hatfield's BEAUTIFUL CREATURE was meant to be the repository for the softer, more melodic songs of that year's batch. It succeeds on that score--the exquisite "Close Your Eyes," the aching codependents' theme "Choose Drugs," and the lush near-hit "Somebody is Waiting for Me" all typify the kind of hooky soft-rock that Hatfield has been penning since her days in the Blake Babies. But even amongst the sparkle and shine, Hatfield challenges listeners with little bits of creative dissonance ("Daniel") and lyrics whose dourness provides an intriguing counterpoint to the delicately pretty tunes they inhabit.

  • Critic Reviews
Spin (7/00, p.159) - 6 out of 10 - "...Hatfield was born to lead the Indie Waifs out of history and into heaven....every song walks the edge of loveliness....[She] seizes the high moral ground on [each] song..."
Entertainment Weekly (5/19/00, p.75) - "...[The album] is, well, beautiful..." - Rating: B-
CMJ (5/8/00, p.28) - "...A collection of sweet ballads marked by her gently wilting voice and tender wordplay....finding an already accomplished artist growing increasingly comfortable with herself..."
Melody Maker (5/23/00, p.59) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...Packed with great tunes...Juliana has unwittingly written the soundtrack to the best-ever episode of Dawson's Creek..."
Mojo (Publisher) (7/00, p.104) - "...Gentle, reflective, angsty girl'n'guitar fodder often more worthy than interesting....{it] has some great quirky phrasing and a heartfelt call to the Bridget Jones generation..."
