On the second Silver Mt. Zion album, 2001's BORN INTO TROUBLE AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARD, the Canadian post-rock ensemble expanded both its sound and its lineup, adding a cellist, violinist, and guitarist to the original trio led by singer/multi-instrumentalist Efrim Menuck of Godspeed You Black Emperor. Not surprisingly, the bolstered Mt. Zion ensemble often shares GYBE's dense, brooding aesthetic, as on "C'Mon Come On (Lose an Endless Longing)," but it also takes time for more subtle moments, particularly in the chiming passages and fragile vocals of "The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes."
