Much as Emmylou Harris did on WRECKING BALL, progressive-country crooner Jimmie Dale Gilmore has expanded his sonic palette to encompass a broader range of styles. On BRAVER NEWER WORLD, Gilmore taps his professed love of rock and pop music to create an album that may unsettle country purists but will delight anyone else with ears. Gilmore the songwriter also takes a larger role here than on previous albums, with composer credits on 6 of the album's 11 songs. As always, he knows where to go for outside material as well, pulling choice cuts from Sam Phillips, Joe Ely and Blind Lemon Jefferson.
Stylistic left turns abound. There are the raga guitar riffs of the title cut, the hip-hop drum track on Phillips' "Where Is Love Now" and the pounding rock and roll beat and '60s organ sound of "Outside The Lines." No matter how far afield Gilmore gets from his country roots, his high, tremulous tenor retains its gentle power and his songwriting remains artful and poignant.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (7/11-25/96, p.89) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...When Jimmie Dale Gilmore turns his love light on, we all shine on."
Option (9-10/96, pp.108-109) - "...producer T-Bone Burnett has opened things up and created a much more expansive sound, so much so that you can almost see the wide-open landscapes that inspire Gilmore's crooning..."
Musician (8/96, p.86) - "...his singular ability to invest his lonesome prairie sound with a sort of spiritual grace--it's been dubbed, with semi-accuracy, `Zen Country'--is undiminished here. The slow shuffle and lush, Mideast-tinged instrumentation of...`Where Is Love' conjures the ambience of a Jim Jarmusch film..."
