Following the release of BLACKENED AIR and RUN TO RUIN, the steadily growing cult success of contemporary singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia led Touch and Go Records to reissue her first album, DOGS. Originally released on a tiny label in 1999, DOGS contains, in embryonic form, all the elements of Nastasia's better known later albums.
Over the course of 15 brief songs (only the tortured "Nobody Knew Her" breaks four minutes), Nastasia spins a litany of oddly titled but affecting lyrics about romance and darkness. Steve Albini's bare-bones production keeps the focus entirely on Nastasia's wounded but unflagging vocals, with the more ornate backing of her later albums largely absent.

    Q (p.139) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]hese remain quintessential essays in minimal coffee-house Americana."
Uncut (p.111) - 4 stars out of 5 - "DOGS measures up strikingly well to its legend....As a singer/songwriter who can describe heightened emotional states with an undemonstrative elegance, she has few contemporary equals."
CMJ (p.5) - "DOGS displays her dissonance-laced Americana in its early form..."
