Pushing the play button on EX HEX feels a bit like entering the room in the middle of a lovers' quarrel. "I can't stand you lying here on the floor," begins Mary Timony's 2005 solo release, a relationship history implied in one line. Like much of EX HEX, the opener "On the Floor" finds Timony in familiar territory, using sparse but down-to-earth personal narratives about relationships that unfold into fantastical daydreams about love. The former Helium leader can be enigmatic, pondering Jesus Christ one minute, then listening to the Fat Boys the next on "In the Grass." Her strange stream of consciousness spins a thread throughout EX HEX.
Drummer/bassist Devin Ocampo (the Medications) supports Timony, providing a hail of rhythms that combine Gang of Four-like dance rock with fractured, Joy Division-style beats. With the help of producer Brendan Canty (Fugazi), the duo creates an interesting dynamic, a sound rooted in punk, but with an angular, progressive bent. Timony takes command of the guitar with charisma, winding trance-like lines that modulate into weirdness before coming home again, much like the nature of her lyrics.
