Massacre is the meeting of three brilliant, aggressive musical minds. Avant-garde electric guitarist Fred Frith, known for his work with pioneering art rockers Henry Cow, his own solo work (much of which is performed on "treated" guitar), and his collaborations with the likes of John Zorn hooks up here with producer, music industry maven, and bass wizard Bill Laswell. Add to this duo skin-pounder Charles Hayward, a lot of amplification, effects, and ample room for experimentation, and the results are likely to sound exactly like FUNNY VALENTINE.
These wholly instrumental, wildly experimental compositions ride enormous, angular grooves anchored by Laswell's liquid, morphing basslines and Hayward's spastic yet conversational drumming. Frith's sonic innovations break several dimensional barriers as they alternate between raw, fragmented lines and ethereal journeys. This is gothic, psychedelic rock for insane mutant geniuses. While probably not everyone's cup of tea, Massacre will reward the adventurous.
