A snapshot of the dancehall scene, Jam Down Vibrations features big hits and exclusive cuts, established stars, and brand new talent. This nicely weighted compilation, although totally cutting edge dancehall, still sports an amazing diversity of styles, while the careful sequencing insures that the shift in sound doesn't jar. Shabba Ranks kicks off the 12 track set with the slowly pulsing "Think You Got It All," taking on those who pursue wealth over righteousness. And righteousness was a theme sweeping the dancehall during this time. None preached it sweeter than the late Garnet Silk, who appears here with one of his deepest spiritual numbers. Cocoa Tea had long been of a similar mind; with "Babylon Is Burning" he returns to a deep dread sound, but with a crisp production that sounds totally modern. The last two DJs had make their marks as cultural singers, but it was the transformations amongst the ragamuffin crew that evoked the most comment. DJ's like Terror Fabulous and Bounty Killer known for their slackness come up from the depths with more uplifting messages. Merciless was still unrepentant, but the gunplay on "Nine Lives" is so over the top, its irony and humor is evident to all. Jam Down is not all culturally based; Dennis Brown, for one, offers up a powerful lover's lament. Beenie Man, J.C. Lodge, and Sugar Minott brilliantly combine on the entertaining and infectious "Favorite Flavor," and Ghost discusses style with his own frenetic falsetto one. Debutante Pancho Kryzal and up and comer Lenky Don both deliver their cuts with flair. Add an exclusive hip-hop remix of three older hits, and this collection had it all. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
