Though they remain a '70s rock connoisseur's delight, the Dictators are somewhat obscure next to such punk trailblazers as the Ramones and the New York Dolls, and the more commercial, pop-flavored songs of their second album, 1977's MANIFEST DESTINY, did little to elevate them from the NY ghetto. Despite all this, there's plenty to like on the record itself--for example, the sweet harmonies of the Cheap Trick-like "Exposed" and "Sleepin' With the TV On," as well as the strutting rock of "Science Has Gone Too Far." Just a couple of years later, bands such as Twisted Sister (which featured former Dictators) and Motley Cre would ride this blend of melody and mayhem all the way to the bank, but the Dictators had to settle for being ahead of their time.
