Japan's psychedelic outfit Acid Mothers Temple can usually be counted on for trance-inducing drones and noise-rock freak-outs, and their 2007 release NAM MYO HO REN GE KYO falls right in line with that expectation. The album features one long track centered on a Buddhist chant (whose words comprise the album's title) which builds with layers of gongs, drums, guitars, synths, and all manner of other sounds. The effect is at once holy, and an unholy racket, and the combination is a stunning one.

The Wire (p.55) - "It's heady stuff and immensely impressive, out there but with an instinctive sense of how to channel its diverse parts."
