The films of Federico Fellini, with their grim carnival atmosphere leavened by sentiment, seem almost indivisible from the music by Nino Rota that accompanies them, and indeed the claim of annotator Gilbert Salachas here (the notes are in English only) that one could just as easily call Fellini "Rota's director" as Rota "Fellini's musician" has some credibility. The pair collaborated for more than 30 years, but the basic patterns of their partnership were set during the 1950s, in the six films whose scores are excerpted here. Beginning with The White Sheik (1952), these films were consecutive, and they are generally regarded as the ones in which the filmmaker's distinctive style took shape. Rota was already an experienced classical composer by then, but he took on the challenge of developing a musical language to go with Fellini's cinematic one. A program like the one chosen here -- for which nobody claims credit -- offers a fascinating insight into the development of the partnership, a kind of dance in which each artist alternately took the lead. Rota was a natural font of the garish popular-style tunes Fellini used to illustrate the Italian street, and he came up with them from the beginning. As time went by he developed a broader sentimental language as a foil for this, taking strides forward in Fellini's lesser-known films: Il Bidone (The Swindle, 1955) and Fortunella (The Happy-Go-Lucky Girl, 1958). The latter will be especially interesting for U.S. listeners, for it is the source of the melody that later became the Godfather Theme (hear "Buongiorno, Fortunella," track 27). This relationship, when it came to light, cost Rota his Oscar for the Godfather score (which mandated original compositions), but in the words of director Lina Wertmller, "Nino was an adorable, absent-minded, and free-spirited musician who recycled everything possible." The moods of the two passages are quite different, and the entire episode gives an insight into Rota's ability to manipulate very simple material. This release from Britain's Cherry Red Records label will be of great interest to fans of Fellini, Rota, or soundtrack music in general.
