The Melvins were always the great, unwashed torch-carriers of grunge. On PIGS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, the Washington trio collaborates with "doombient" producer/arranger Lustmord for a wonderfully bizarre creation--half-metal/half-sweaty-stoner-rock heating up in a Tool shed, while a dark ambient noise storm whistles through the cracks in its tin walls. As usual, King Buzzo growls and hammers out deranged guitar licks, while Dale Crover's drums seem trapped in a thick mud, and bassist Kevin Rutmanis tries not to self-destruct as he makes noise at the lowest end of the human hearing range. Lustmord (whose other collaborators range from Throbbing Gristle to composer Robert Rich) adds some refreshing ambient bubbles, clanks, and whooshing noises to the Melvins' usual sludge, lightening it until it's almost breathable. By the time Buzz's crunchy metal guitar solo comes swirling on the fumes of methane and burnt rubber in "The Bloated Pope," the truth is out--these sonic psychos are actually highbrow artists in disguise. Just make sure the volume is low for at least the first section of the distorted mega-bomb, "Pink Bat."

  • Critic Reviews
Alternative Press (p.162) - "[A] match made in weirdo heaven: The Melvins bring the rock; Lustmord brings the tribal industrial clang."
CMJ (p.4) - "A perfect synthesis of everything great about the Melvins, from 10-minute stretches of sinister noise to raging riff-metal..."
