Amy Ray, always the harder-edged half of the Indigo Girls, released her second solo effort, PROM, in 2005. Her first solo record, 2001's STAG, explored a tougher, rawer sound than her fulltime band is known for. More successful and consistent than its predecessor, PROM's 10 tracks of politicized punk pull from Ray's own experiences in high school--from the typical teenage road trips to the discrimination stemming from growing up queer in a Southern state--and feature a keen mix of wit, humor, anger, and frustration. When her raspy, earnest voice sings of a "new gender nation with a new desire" in the anthemic opener, "Put It Out For Good," it's easy to get swept along for the ride.
