PSYCHO'S PATH, the first true solo album of John Lydon's career, finds the former Mr. Rotten on a techno kick, handling the lion's share of production and performance and even showing his vulnerable side. With his trademark nasal moan, Lydon provides a cold, detached journey through subjects ranging from human rights ("Grave Ride") to John Wayne Gacy ("Psychopath"), along with healthy doses of his trademark cynical tirades.
Musically, there are more than a few echoes of Lydon's former band PIL, although the rhythm section on PSYCHO'S PATH is of a more electronic variety. The album includes celebrity mixes from such luminaries as The Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, and Moby. Their work helps to keep Lydon's rantings listenable, while providing a refreshing, modern take on one of post-punk's most consistently interesting personalities.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (9/4/97, p.70) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...[Lydon's] first-ever solo album features his most dissonant noises since PiL's 1981 FLOWERS OF ROMANCE....It's a gas to hear him out-Prodigy the Prodigy, snarling over grooves from electronica heavyweights such as Leftfield, the Chemical Brothers and Moby."
Uncut (magazine) (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "PSYCHO'S PATH is fun and '90s-dancey and now contains his Leftfield collaboration 'Open Up'..."
