ROUGH HARVEST is a labor of love for the artist formerly known as John Cougar. The project sounds as though it was executed purely for self-indulgence, and offers an interesting collection of music.
Considering his band's powerhouse performance at Bob Dylan's 30th anniversary tribute concert, it's not at all a surprise that when picking covers for ROUGH HARVEST, Mellencamp opted for "Farewell Angelina" and "In My Time of Dying." The tracks are treated to acoustic arrangements with sweet strings and John's take-it-for-what-it-is vocal style. The murky, swamp-drenched slide guitar on his revisit to "Rain on the Scarecrow" has its own sense of urgency and truly rivals the original. Violinist Miriam Sturm is a vital part of John Mellencamp's sound and is the emotional centerpoint on new versions of "Human Wheels" and "Minutes to Memories." The mandolin and shared vocals are a refreshing touch to the oft-covered "Under the Boardwalk." Mellencamp shows that there's no danger of losing the uplifting energy in his music by closing the album with a rousing live version of "Wild Night," a satisfying yield from this eclectic musical harvest.

Entertainment Weekly (9/10/99, p.152) - "...Die-hard boosters...will find some chewable grains of wheat-field whimsy here, in a roadhouse revamp of 'Rain on the Scarecrow'...and surprisingly passionate readings of rock standards....It ain't Bruce. But it ain't half bad." - Rating: B-
