The High Llamas' 1992 debut, originally released only in France (though half of the album's songs had appeared on a British EP, APRICOTS, in 1991), is by far the band's most song-oriented album. Downplaying the country-ish tinge of many songs on leader Sean O'Hagan's 1990 solo album, HIGH LLAMAS, SANTA BARBARA consists of nine stand-alone songs, most in the four-to-five minute range, lacking the segues and instrumental interludes of later Llamas releases.
O'Hagan has called this "my guitar-pop album." While his guitars take a more prominent role here than on later albums, the songs are actually built on multi-hued layers of keyboards, accented with strings, mandolins, and the lighter-than-air backing vocals of soon-to-depart guitarist Anita Visser. The highlights are the gently mocking "Period Music" and the beautifully atmospheric "Apricots," but every song is a small gem.
