Longtime friends Jerry Garcia and David Grisman spent much of the early '90s working together on acoustic recordings of folk, country and bluegrass tunes. After Garcia's death in 1995, Grisman decided to begin releasing the prodigious backlog of music the two had accumulated, with each release covering a different genre of American music. The first, SHADY GROVE, concentrates on the folk and bluegrass that was one of their first musical loves.
This music is rich in history, encompassing everything from an Appalachian folk song (the title tune) to a Civil War ballad ("The Sweet Sunny South"). Garcia's warm, weathered vocals are handily supported by his and Grisman's nimble picking (on guitar, mandolin, banjo and other stringed things), and by such Grisman regulars as bassist Jim Kerwin and fiddler/percussionist Joe Craven. Exhaustively annotated, the booklet gives a full history of each song that will be invaluable to both serious students and casual listeners.
Rolling Stone (12/26/96, p.199) - "...The picking is immaculate; Garcia's singing is shaky in that gentle, endearing way that was unmistakably his; and the tunes--hardy old ballads and barn-dance kickers going back to the Civil War and beyond--underscore the truly deathless beauty and virtue of Garcia's life's work."
Option (1-2/97, p.88) - "...a fantastic collection of ballads, blues, aires and chanties....Garcia's haunting voice is a welcome anchor for the entire set, and the disc includes both an excellent booklet (informative text, historic photos, lyrics) and an oh-so-cool hidden track..."
