Tiltmaster: D. Leigh Blood (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ, bass, drums).
Additional personnel: Jeffrey Simmons (electric guitar, piano); Rick Slevira (violin, viola); Scott P (drums, percussion); Greg Mills (drums); Joel Simches (percussion).
Boston-based musician Daryl Blood, essentially the only member of Tiltmaster, maps out a tremendous amount of stylistic ground in a short span of time on his debut full-length album, Swan Girth. The poppy "Airship" metaphorically links breaking up with dropping bombs, to almost humorous effect. Elsewhere, "Welcome to My Silo" and "Negative Suffice" sound like Stephen Malkmus on a James Taylor binge. But Blood pursues a darker muse for most of the rest of Swan Girth. Nick Drake-ish acoustic guitar propels "Volcanic Sun," while "Waterbased" rides a Sonic Youth-inspired riff. "Safe" begins a piano-based cycle of song that treads the axis between Elliot Smith and the Baroque pop of Ron Sexsmith. Overall, Swan Girth is a promising debut that can only be faulted for cramming too many moods and styles into such a small package -- maybe a little disorienting, but never dull. ~ Jason Nickey
