In the spring of 1992, while touring with Neil Young, Victoria Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Two benefit concerts were held in her honor last fall in New York and Los Angeles. All the artists featured on this album are donating their royalties to Victoria Williams. A portion of these royalties will also be paid to the Sweet Relief Musicians Trust Fund.
The shear breadth and diversity of artists gathered for this benefit project, Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams, is a tribute to the affection Victoria Williams' peers had for her. It conveniently also makes for heady listening for any fan of contemporary music. The hard, brittle edges of Soul Asylum ("Summer of Drugs") and Buffalo Tom ("Merry Go Round") stand shoulder to shoulder with the country-folk of Lucinda Williams ("Main Road") and Maria McKee (an inspired and riveting "Opelousas (Sweet Relief)"). Sweet Relief offers a unique opportunity to introduce yourself to an enduring songwriter while savoring some of the day's most intriguing musicians. How sweet it is! ~ Roch Parisien

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (7/8/93, p.109) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...[the songs] are highly individal and, in most cases, offer radical reinterpretations of Williams's originals. What unites them without exception, however, is the inspired nature of the performances...a moving tribute to a songwriter who deserves to be more widely recognized..."
Entertainment Weekly (7/23/93, p.60) - "...Sad that illness had to knock Victoria's talent out of obscurity, but this is a great eclectic introduction to her work..." - Rating: A
Q (10/93, p.112) - 3 Stars - Good - "...[Evan Dando and Eddie Vedder's] textured, wistful voices do justice to these texture, wistful songs...while Michael Penn's 'Weeds' is an oddball potential hit if ever there was one..."
    Melody Maker (8/28/93, p.36) - "...a uniquely delightful hour...."
