1993's TENDERNESS offers 16 selections that further explore the areas that have consistently fascinated Kip Hanrahan: sultry rhythms, sensual arrangements, and poetic lyrics cast in dramatic settings. He's joined by many of his regular collaborators, including pianist Don Pullen, bass player Fernando Saunders, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and saxophonist Chico Freeman. A special big name guest on hand this time out is Sting, who took an interest in Hanrahan's work early on, even securing his American Clave label distribution for a time in the early '90s.
TENDERNESS mixes tropical percussion and jazz balladry with surprising and bracing results. As always, the music fully utilizes the strengths and characters of the individual players and singers on board. Cyrille is a powerful force on this album, anchoring the various strains with precision and verve.
