British belter Terry Reid, despite his respectable career, is probably best known as the great Almost Man of English hard rock. He was offered the singer slot in both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, passing on both before Robert Plant and Ian Gillan took the respective roles. Listening to Reid's self-titled 1969 second album, it's clear that he had a good reason for doggedly pursuing his own vision.
One of the singer's defining moments, TERRY REID showcases his big, bold voice to full effect. With a mix of rock, blues, and '60s pop, Reid demonstrates why hardcore Britrock cultists rate him as highly as his contemporaries Rod Stewart and Plant. The roughness and intensity in his voice coexist with a fluidity and soulfulness exemplified by such tunes as "May Fly" and "July," and an amped-up version of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" offers an indication of Reid's interpretive abilities. Though Reid never graduated to stadium-sized stradom, albums like this assure his status as one of the finest British rock voices of his era.
