Brooklyn's Religious Knives further ground their roiling writhings of noise and chant with steady, kraut-rock grooves on their second full-length LP, which was co-produced by Thurston Moore. Two of the Knives were in Double Leopards, whose improvisatory sound-swirls sometimes ambled aimlessly, but the Knives have caged that anarchic tendency. Tracks like "On a Drive" do indeed drone and meander, but there's a doom-laden percussive skronk keeping it in check. "Downstairs," with its organ and cryptic poetry, is as close as they'll get to playing a Doors song, but they make it their own with some warped vocal chanting and a consistent, funky backbeat.

  • Critic Reviews
The Wire (p.68) - "'Downstairs' is a taut, bass-heavy crawl through the same dangerous neighbourhoods staked out by The Cramps, The Gun Club and The Birthday Party..."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.70) - "Album centerpieces 'On A Drive' and 'The Storm' are the heaviest, darkest material here....It's difficult not to want to sink into the depths of THE DOOR's atmospheric urban decay."
