Adam Busch ("Mr. Manishevitz, his own bad self") wires dark and droll songs that lurk in the twilight regions of your brain. He sounds much like a decaffeinated Tom Verlaine on the first couple of cuts-perhaps a little more world-weary, but just as mysterious. His delicate and often arcane lyrics avoid the goofy surrealism that is so in-vogue among the indie scenesters. Instead, Busch's words beguile by hinting at meaning and at the somber emotions hiding just beneath their surface. GRAMMAR BELL's stunning title track, built from almost nothing-acoustic guitar, vocals, and gently howling tape loops that sound like a choir of ghosts-is one of the best "one-chord" songs you'll ever hear. Leo Kottke-style finger-picking informs a few cuts, including Manishevitz's unique take on a Mississippi John Hurt tune.

  • Critic Reviews
CMJ (6/7/99, pp.27-8) - "...grey, folkish landscapes of thin, reverberating riffs and stately melodies. When these arrangements cluster around [Adam] Busch's adenoidal ballads, even the most obtuse of lyrics and plodding arrangements become gracefully tragic and sadly soulful."
