This sultry summer album from Texas proves that WHITE ON BLONDE, the band's triumphant return to the big stage in 1997, was no fluke. If anything, THE HUSH is even more assured, even more polished, and even more laden with the sort of catchy melodies and gorgeous textures that brought Texas to the spotlight in the first place.
Sharleen Spiteri has likened this album to Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS in terms of Texas' career development, and given her vocal performance it's hard to disagree. Try "Tell Me the Answer" for an extraordinary falsetto sound, fraught yet sensual. The British radio hits "Once in a Lifetime" and "When We Are Together" will get under your skin immediately with their Motown flavorings. The up-tempo hit "Summer Son" will set your toes tapping. Toward the end of the album, a more chilled, soulful side prevails in numbers like "Saint" and "The Day Before I Went Away." Production throughout is immaculate, with a sheen of strings and a collage of keyboard timbres. THE HUSH will leave a warm glow in your heart and a smile on your face!

Rolling Stone (6/10/99, p.120) - 3 1/2 out of 5 - "...the time is right for HUSH - imagine a Scottish Diana Ross smoldering over swanky beats that fall somewhere between Britney Spears and Portishead, Eurythmics and Lisa Stansfield....All sleek art and hot pop - what could be more 1999?"
    Q (1/00, p.87) - Included in Q Magazine's "50 Best Albums of 1999."
Q (6/99, p.98) - 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent - "...sounds learned, rich and confident....a crowd-pleaser whose at-home breeziness and aplomb increase its urgency to entertain....Texas may prove to be as essential to pop as Manic Street Preachers are to rock."
Billboard (6/5/99, p.19) - " assertive album that showcases the sensuous vocals of...Sharleen Spiteri and the band's ability to craft soulful, melodic, and timeless pop songs steeped in R&B influences....brims with potential..."
Mojo (Publisher) (6/99, p.96) - "...All slur and slide, electronic sounds and beats subtly mingled with human softness, THE HUSH parades potential hits one after another.....founder-bassist Johnny McElhone's first solo production is a svelte masterwork."
