North Carolina singer-songwriter Barton Carroll has solid indie rock credentials, having recorded and toured with Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray, Delorean, and others. But his solo records take a more traditional-minded approach. THE LOST ONE takes its name from a vintage film noir, and its 12 songs offer a rueful take on modern romance, ranging from the sardonic "A Pretty Girl's Going To Ruin My Life (Again)" to a closing take on the traditional folk song "Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still."

  • Critic Reviews
No Depression (p.74) - "There's a taste of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's old-timey warble in his voice, but the sing-song melodies and deliberate tempos are dramatic, and at times quietly unhinged."
Harp (magazine) (p.107) - "Each of the 12 tracks has such a natural bearing that their contemporary vintage seems to rearrange decades at will. How could these songs not have always been here?
