The fifth release from Chicagoans Trans Am follows their same formula of electro-infused rock. Pushing many Kraftwerk buttons, RED LINE fades in more minimally and electronically, recalling the characteristics of their second album, THE SURVEILLANCE, and their last, FUTURE WORLD. As with FUTURE WORLD, metallic guitar lines ride atop futuristic melodies, chugging along to the beat of a future world as seen through eyes of the past.
With 21 tracks, the band's path to experimentalism swerves into acoustic numbers ("The Dark Gift"), sparse, bubbling analogue ("Air and Space"), intentionally amateurish psychedelic jams ("Bad Cat"), and even free jazz grooves ("Shady Groove"). Most other songs incorporate SURVEILLANCE's theme: rough, cathartic rock. With RED LINE Trans Am stay true to their purpose, using the fuzz of guitars and adding a little electric fuel. This time their shifts are subtler.

The Wire (10/00, p.76) - "...It's very well produced....featuring one or two solid rocking numbers and some nice abstraction..."
CMJ (9/4/00, p.24) - "...Cosmic electronic soundscapes fused with '70s arena rock and early '80s new wave..."
Mojo (Publisher) (11/00, p.96) - "...A grab-bag of a record, but one with a few outstanding moments good as this band has ever done."
NME (Magazine) (11/11/00, p.32) - 7 out of 10 - "...Their most accessible statement so far....burying themselves behind unremitting hammering percussion and occasionally leaping from the shadows with a scrap of melody or a mildly incongruous Ted Nugent style guitar solo..."
