Since the early 1990s, Ohio folk-rockers Over the Rhine have been turning out their idiosyncratic blend of singer-songwriter fare with jazzy, Rickie Lee Jones-ish touches and a dash of almost cabaret-like theatricality for a hardcore cult audience. THE TRUMPET CHILD expands their sound to include everything from horn sections to cello and exotic rhythms, while the cooing, wispy vocals of Karin Bergquist provide longtime admirers with a link to their beloved band's long history.

  • Critic Reviews
Uncut (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Their fail-safe device is Berquist's voice, a lush instrument redolent of nightclubs, roadhouses and Mississippi riverboats."
No Depression (p.106) - "Bergquist's voice has always been sultry, but here she's at the top of her game, scatting, soothing and seducing."
    Q (Magazine) (p.109) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "A handsome, Madeleine Peyroux-ish affair....[With] Berquist's feline purr conjuring a dimly lit world..."
The Word (magazine) (p.102) - "[R]ight from the swelling brass that open their tenth album, they know exactly how to invoke the Crescent City's twin spirits, those both stately and sleazy."
