The Waterboys' eponymous debut album finds Mike Scott essaying his vision of "big music." Part Van Morrison, part U2, it was sweeping and romantic, with nearly every song stretched out to epic length. At this point, Scott's vision far exceeds his grasp, yet it's fascinating to hear him try to reconcile the two extremes. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

  • Critic Reviews
Q (3/02, p.140) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...They fused the confessional tone of Dylan's BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, the yearning of Patti Smith and the rocking euphoria of the E Street band....proving that U2 weren't the only Celts investing in the redemptive power of rock..."
Mojo (Publisher) (5/02, p.122) - "...They didn't sound like anybody else, and still don't....you sense Mike Scott is striving for something..."
