Produced by former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, Sons & Daughters' sophomore full-length finds the Glasgow-based act coming into their own and hitting upon an infectious mix of muscular, slightly dark guitar-driven Britpop, with touches of glam-rock insouciance and Northern Soul energy thrown in for good measure. The musical focus of THIS GIFT, however, is certainly on the sultry vocals of lead singer Adele Bethel, who leaves her own distinct mark on the tradition of the rock frontwoman.

  • Critic Reviews
Spin (p.97) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "With propulsive pogo-worthy rhythms and singer Adele Bethel's insistent vocals, these rough-edged folk punks go for a quick knockout on their poppier second album."
Uncut (p.93) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Darling' and 'This Gift' barrel along manfully, flushed by Scott Patterson's boot-cut garage rock."
Q (Magazine) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Ditching their Johnny Cash obsession for a dose of '60s girl-pop has done Sons & Daughters a power of good....THIS GIFT rattles along in the finest punk tradition."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[B]road strokes of surf twang, Motown beats and Spector-era girl group pop lend their country-punk sound extra melodic sting."
Blender (Magazine) (p.101) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "There's an exhilarating and ruthless intensity here, mingling the grimness of country murder ballads with the simplicity of girl-group pop."
Clash (magazine) (p.108) - "Lead single 'Gift Complex' sets the scene, all jagged-edge guitars and drums sounding as if they've been thrown down a flight of stairs. The lyrics have grown darker, and more concrete..."
The Word (magazine) (p.102) - "[The album] introduces a touch of pop to the dirty garage....The guitars on 'Iodine' and 'House In My Head' are positively Smithsian..."
Record Collector (magazine) (pp.99-101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The different sounds give the feel of a band in transition, solidifying old strengths, but also grasping towards a wider future....Their experiments are wildly successful."
