1995's TORN AGAIN is the album that most definitively bridges the gap between Peter Case's power-pop days as a key member of the Nerves and the Plimsouls, and his folkier solo work. Though there's nothing as poppy as "A Million Miles Away" or "Hanging on the Telephone" here, these songs are brash and punchy, and as electric as anything Case has done since his first solo album back in 1986.
Lyrically, Case takes his cues from pulp fiction authors such as Jim Thompson and Elmore Leonard, writing story songs where deep emotions are never far from the surface. There's a barely-contained hint of implicit violence in some of these songs, which would tip over into Stan Ridgway-style B-movie melodrama were Case not such a canny songwriter. If you're a Plimsouls or Nerves fan looking to dip into Case's solo work, here's a good place to start.

  • Critic Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (7/21/95, p.64) - "Singer-songwriter Peter Case peoples his twilit American heartlands with hapless characters....A spare band backs his scratchy, convincing vocals." - Rating: A-
Q (9/95, p.114) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...a gritty collection of stories and statements, cunningly written and immaculately performed. It's arguably the best thing Case has done, and it deserves a wider hearing than it will get..."
Alternative Press (10/95, p.64) - "...The rugged band music on TORN AGAIN, using a group of seasoned (wizened?) friends and pros, and his solo acoustic ballads are rich with the felt reality of their metaphorical tales..."
