One would have to return to BACK IN BLACK to find a lead singer switcheroo as smooth as the one pulled off by the Ponys on their Matador debut, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. Recorded after Brian Case replaced former stalwart Ian Adams on vocals and second guitar, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS is the Chicago quartet's best offering to date. The crisper production--courtesy of the band members themselves--crystallizes their echo-drenched take on Pixies-style guitar pop, while leaving their feral energy intact.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.63) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hey crash and boom and reverberate....Their forebears are more along the lines of faux-arena formalists like Dinosaur Jr. and Spiritualized."
Spin (p.98) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Here, John Agnello's knob-twiddling is spot-on, with the guitars quivering and quaking on the hook-laden 'Double Vision'..."
Magnet (p.109) - "Even when the Ponys bring things down to earth -- like on the slide-guitar-laced gospel blues of 'Shine' -- they can't resist ladling on enough echoed vocals and cranial-zapping effects to induce Spaceman 3 flashbacks."
