Afro Celt Sound System started as a fairly nebulous, if noble, idea--bring together an assortment of European and African musicians and hope to come up with a result greater than the sum of the project's parts. The idea paid off, and the progress of the band may be measured by its confidence in moving well beyond its initial premise.
With its second album, RELEASE, the group coalesces around the talents of seven Irish and African performers and more prominent dance beats. Sinead O'Connor provides a haunting vocal element on the title track, while "Even in My Dreams" sets an angelic harp against an initial trip-hop sequence.

  • Critic Reviews
Q (5/99, p.102) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...the spontaneity, the mix of ancient and modern, the black and white, the fluidity and breathless raises the techno pulse a few notches too..."
CMJ (5/17/99, pp.25-26) - "...The band manages to create a cohesive global fusion that remains both reverent and thoroughly contemporary, if not ahead of its time..."
