Personnel includes: Joan Armatrading (vocals, guitar); Thomas Dolby (synthesizer).
Arguably Joan Armatrading's best album, 1981's WALK UNDER LADDERS is where folk rock meets new wave. The West Indies-born, English Midlands-bred Armatrading's first few (mostly acoustic) albums charted her as a worthy '70s singer/songwriter. This made the glossy electric sheen of 1980's ME MYSELF I both a surprise and a delight. Produced by new wave hitmeister Steve Lillywhite (XTC, U2, etc.) and featuring a hipster's delight credit list including Andy Partridge, Thomas Dolby, Tony Levin and the redoubtable rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, WALK UNDER LADDERS is a crisp, punchy album whose detailed musical textures never overpower Armatrading's purring, liquid voice or her heartfelt, emotionally open lyrics. Songs like "The Weakness In Me" and "I Wanna Hold You" are among her best.
