Damon and Naomi's second release is a real beauty, again produced by Mark Kramer, who handled their debut as well as all the releases by their previous band, Galaxie 500. Kramer adds an assortment of instruments and effects to the duo's spare songs, creating emotional landscapes for each number. THE WONDROUS WORLD is probably the peak realization of this collaboration between artists and producer (perhaps realizing this, the pair struck off on their own with their breakthrough follow-up, PLAYBACK SINGERS).
Moody, evocative, and poetic, the eight originals are accompanied by a trio of well-chosen covers. The surprise gem is the duo's rendition of Country Joe McDonald's "Who Am I" (originally recorded by Country Joe & The Fish in the '60s); perhaps more apt than surprising is the set's closing number, The Band's "Whispering Pines" (and really, what could follow such a prayerful slice of solemnity?).

Alternative Press (1/96, pp.74-75) - "...WONDROUS, a work of darkly organic textures, will easily establish itself as a timeless collection of well-formed melancholy."
