  • In director Daniel Petrie's remake of the 1939 Bette Davis film DARK VICTORY, based on the original play by Bertram Bloch and George Emerson Brewer, Susan Hayward plays Laura Pember, an oil-rich American heiress who passes the time in the English countryside giving parties, taking pills and lovers, hobnobbing with pretenders to the aristocracy, and ignoring ominous symptoms of illness. Laura lives in a perpetual state of denial, refusing the help of her ex-lover Mike Bannerman (Edward Judd) and hiding her painful secret from her young sister, Ellen (Diane Baker). No one can get through to Laura until she meets Dr. John Carmody (Michael Craig), a handsome young doctor who sees through her insouciance and forces her to receive the treatment she needs for her terminal illness. Time becomes more precious than Laura ever imagined as she begins a new life as John's wife. Living in the shadow of her sickess, the newlyweds move to John's hometown in Cornwall, basking in their new romance. Despite her illness, Laura lives a quaint and quiet life that she never thought possible, fulfilled by the love of her husband. Jazz great Chet Baker makes an appearance in Petrie's film as himself.
