  • Michel Hazanavicius' stylistically daring, dialogue-free comedy-drama THE ARTIST stars Jean Dujardin as George Valentin, a matinee idol in Hollywood before the dawn of talkies. His marriage is far from perfect, and one day he meets ambitious chorus girl Peppy Miller (Brnice Bejo) and is smitten. Very quickly thereafter, sound comes to movies, and George sinks all his money into one last epic silent film, while Peppy becomes a star in the new era. John Goodman co-stars as the head of the film studio working with Valentin. THE ARTIST played at both the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

  • Critic Reviews
5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he film's charm and delight of discovery, plus its sterling international performances, could make it a breakout hit in theaters..."
    Box Office

"[A] wholly resonant love letter to the early history of cinema, this French production shot on old Hollywood studio lots is itself a (nearly) silent film, one that comes off as both respectfully authentic and playfully modern..."
    Film Comment

"[A] French production that is lovable from start to finish.....[T]his superbly stylish comedy is set in Hollywood and starts in 1927, when audiences were still enraptured by the soundless sight of Hollywood stars on the silver screen."
    Wall Street Journal

"Drama, comedy, action and romance are intertwined in this gorgeously photographed and brilliantly directed film. Lead performances are thoroughly engaging..."
    USA Today

"THE ARTIST is a gold dust movie, a picture whose very boldness lies in its perceived lightness....Its a picture that romances its audience into watching in a new way..."
    Movieline

"THE ARTIST is a charming romance....Beautifully shot..."
    A.V. Club

"THE ARTIST is delightfully old-fashioned, but it's also poppingly contemporary, with a puckish spark of self-awareness." -- Grade: A-
    Entertainment Weekly

"Jean Dujardin is touching funny....Berenice Bejo is deliciously dazzling..."
    Wall Street Journal

"[A] dazzling cinematic objet dart....This is not a work of film history but rather a generous, touching and slightly daffy expression of unbridled movie love."
    New York Times

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "THE ARTIST is a total pleasure....It's A STAR IS BORN blended with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, and yet somehow bracingly fresh."
    Rolling Stone

4 stars out of 4 -- "Here is one of the most entertaining films in many a moon, a film that charms because of its story, its performances and because of the sly way it plays with being silent and black and white."
    Chicago Sun-Times

4 stars out of 4 -- "Michel Hazanavicius's romantic comedy plays like a sweet, airy confection, satisfying the audience's sweet tooth with gentle wit, a lavish production and winning performances."
    Washington Post

"Bejo is genuinely charming as the naive ingenue who becomes an 'it girl'."
    Sight and Sound

5 stars out of 5 -- "THE ARTIST is an audience-pleasing comedy melodrama, as sure-footed throughout as Dujardin and Bejo in their dances together."
    Uncut

4 stars out of 5 -- "Hazanavicius stays faithful to his inspiration in a way that makes his film both a nostalgic throwback and a work of art in its own right."
