The soundtrack to Miramax's motion picture DOWN IN THE DELTA features an all-star line up of pop and R&B stars from the past and the present. Classic soul artists like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Ashford & Simpson join today's chart toppers like Janet, Luther Vandross and D'Angelo. All sixteen tracks on the soundtrack perfectly capture the emotion and introspection felt in rediscovering what's important in life, the major theme of the film.
Among the numerous highlights are Stevie Wonder ("If Ever"), Janet ("God's Stepchild") and The Leverts, Eddie, Gerald & Sean, who combine their voices on a beautifully sung "Where Would I Be." Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men chimes in with "Just A Little Luv" and Cassandra Wilson and Bob James join Luther Vandross in his performance of "I'm Only Human," which was produced by Marcus Miller. Chaka Khan's "Don't Talk To Strangers" was produced by none other than The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (her current label boss) and D'Angelo's "Heaven Must Be Like This" is a must-hear.

  • Critic Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (1/8/99, pp.66-67) - "There's generally nothing more dispiriting than inspirational records. But the mostly R&B soundtrack to Maya Angelou's movie relieves the usual gooeyness with inventive lyrics, fleet melodies, and spare performances..." - Rating: B+
Vibe (2/99, p.140) - "...In lieu of sappy romantic anthems, this collection features breezy inspirational numbers....light jazz accents to smooth contemporary R&B arrangements..."
