A concise overview of vocalist Sarah Brightman's recording career, 2006's DIVA includes the British soprano's Broadway, classical, and pop material, leaning more towards the latter. While "Pie Jesu" impressively displays Brightman's operatic, three-octave range, "Music of the Night" (from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, the musical penned for her by her former husband, Andrew Lloyd Webber) showcases her flair for drama. Brightman seems most enthusiastic, however, when taking on pop/rock songs, as on her plaintive rendition of Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever?" and her majestic version of Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale." Though longtime Brightman aficionados will already own many or all of these tracks on other releases, DIVA serves as a excellent introduction for the uninitiated.
