Now set in the 1900s, or one decade following the events of the show's eighth season, it brought back stars James Drury and Doug McClure (as, respectively, The Virginian and Trampas), and also introduced new characters, namely the Englishman Colonel Alan MacKenzie (Stewart Granger), and ranch hand Roy Tate (Lee Majors). Guest stars include Art Carney, Jack Albertson, Desi Arnaz, John Ireland and Susan Strasberg.
