  • Released theatrically in USA on December 22, 1995. Winner of the Film Advisory Board's Award of Excellence. Animation by Amblimation. Color by Rank Film Labs; prints by DeLuxe; in DTS Sound. The animated film includes live-action scenes at the beginning and end, set in Manhattan. Additional credits: Colin J. Alexander (animation production supervisor); Daan Jippes (storyboard supervisor); Douglas Kirk (layout supervisor); Jeffrey J. Varab, Sahin Ersoz, Rodolphe Guenoden, William Salazar, David Bowers (supervising animators); Mick Harper (supervising digital effects animator). The movie is based on an actual event that took place in Alaska during the winter of 1925. Nome experienced a diphtheria epidemic and dogsleds were used in a mission to deliver antitoxin. The rescue effort was named the "Great Race of Mercy." After making the trip successfully, the dog Balto became a hero. He was honored with a statue in Manhattan's Central Park, and the annual Iditarod dogsled race continues to be held in his memory. Soundtrack available on MCA soundtracks. Rated BBFC U by the British Board of Film Classification.
