As many concertgoers would attest, electronic music is not particularly visually engaging, at least as live music experiences go. Dan Deacon seeks to upend the high-minded seriousness of the avant-garde and inject a fair amount of goofiness and absurdist fun into his 21st-century version of the one-man band. Armed with dime-store toy keyboards, vocoders, and other circuit-riddled oddities, Deacon coaxes strange blips and squeals while happily singing along in a slightly demented fashion. SPIDERMAN OF THE RINGS alternates between childlike whimsy and thrashing, hypnotic synth jams, like the Suicide-on-helium number "The Crystal Cat." Breaking with the staid, highbrow pretensions of much experimental music, SPIDERMAN OF THE RINGS is a rollicking diversion into its lighter side.

  • Critic Reviews
Spin (p.92) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "This one-man A/V club party makes low-budget electronic pop that's as bizarre as it is uproarious."
Uncut (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[P]retty fun...mainly because Deacon eases off the zaniness and hurtles through a number of manically uplifting hypermelodic chip-tune anthems..."
Uncut (p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Dan Deacon has mixed up a background in avant electro-acoustics with a delight in gabba repetition and goofy textures, to produce a delirious psychedelic confit."
Q (Magazine) (p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he 12-minute 'Wham City,' an odyssey into sweeping ecclesiastical harmonies and driven electro strangeness, perhaps best captures his oeuvre."
Clash (magazine) (p.107) - "[H]e mixes his compositions with quirky electronic pop. Humorous monologues, sped-up vocal samples and film sequences gurgle as he bashes the life out of his laptop. Throughout, Deacon is pushing sound to the limits..."
