There's an interesting story and idea behind this easy, charming sounding little holiday album. Warren Schatz, who produced this set and also conceived of it years ago, remembered that his father absolutely loved Christmas and holiday albums, and also had a love of symphonic music. After working as a producer, arranger, and sometimes singer, Schatz went on to run RCA's publishing company, and he eventually ended up the head of the company's music department. Somewhere along the line, he conceived of the idea of combining classical orchestral arrangements with Christmas songs, and as a sort of tribute to his father, he recorded a scaled-down demo of his idea with the Hampton String Quartet. RCA liked and bought the demo recording as is, and it was released as a seasonal holiday LP called What If Mozart Wrote "White Christmas" in 1986, and the set has remained steadily in print ever since in various incarnations. The string quartet recording, however, was only ever intended to be a sketch of Schatz's original concept. This new recording, released by his own Warren Schatz Records imprint, finds Schatz finally able to expand that concept with a larger orchestra (the Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra). Things are still pretty string-heavy, and the arrangements are essentially the same as the ones used for the demo recordings, so this new expanded set doesn't so much replace the earlier quartet release as much as it augments it. ~ Steve Leggett
