The Brisbane of the title refers not to the city in Australia but Brisbane, California, where these non-commercial live recordings of Jimmie Rivers & the Cherokees were made in the early '60s. Rivers was a local sensation as guitarist and leader of the Cherokees western swing band, and steel guitarist Vance Terry played with Billy Jack Wills and Bob Wills before joining the Cherokees. Brisbane Bop reissues 12 tracks from a 1983 LP and adds seven bonus tracks, including a 10+ minute version of "Twin Guitar Special." Nearly all of the selections are instrumental, covering jazz compositions as often as western swing numbers. Being audience recordings from the early '60s, the sound quality isn't great but the disc is easily listenable. Serious western swing enthusiasts will find the music--and lengthy liner notes--fascinating, and this CD was made for them. ~ Greg Adams
