This album represents something of a watershed for the Nashville neo-traditionalist singer-songwriter Paul Burch. Partly recorded in England at the studio of Mark Knopfler, a longtime fan, it signifies Burch's emergence from a time of profound self-doubt, from which he was rescued by the encouragement of, among others, the British patron saint of indie music, the late DJ John Peel (who gets his own song as a tribute). The set kicks off with the confident rocker "Montreal," continuing with the churning rockabilly of "I Will Wait for You," and a pair of darkly mysterious, Gothic country ballads in "Just Before the Bells" and "The Last Dream of Will Keane." And, in something of a career highlight, Burch is also joined by another fan, the bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, on the traditional "Little Glass of Wine," where the blend of their voices sounds as if they'd known each other for years.
