While the variety of producers and production styles makes for a rather choppy flow, this disc offers excellent proof of Beth Nielsen Chapman's considerable talents as both a singer and songwriter. While she is often associated with country-pop, her stylistic approach is closer to adult-oriented rockers like Sheryl Crow or Joan Armatrading. Indeed, tunes like "Life Holds On" and "Beyond the Blue" are emotionally resonant without slipping into pure sentimentality or clich. A strong collection from an honest artist. ~ Tim Sheridan
Critic Reviews
Q (7/99, p.132) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...piano ballads of a certain sentimental leaning are her speciality. [Her] voice is both strong and warm while, lyrically, there's a restraint too that only comes with maturity. Classy."
Dirty Linen (10-11/99, pp.63-4) - "Beth Nielsen Chapman is one of the most interesting writers who've taken the folk singer/songwriter tradition to broader genres....Framed in [her] passionate and smoetimes fragile voice...the [songs] offer a window into [her] creativity..."
