  • "Famous Authors" examines the men and women behind the words that brought them literary kudos. In "George Bernard Shaw," viewers learn how the Irish playwright, reviewer and reformer left behind a quintet of commercially failed "socialist novels." Undaunted, Shaw wrote music criticism for a London newspaper and, later, such stage works as "Pygmalion" and "Man and Superman." Still, his writings were admittedly avenues for his political "statements" and his pet issues like wealth redistribution, secular religions, and even vegetarianism. His plays also unveiled his personal obsessions: fear of intimacy, prudishness, idealism and, most significantly, the dynamic between articulateness and social standing.
