Director Juan Antonio Bayona follows up his critically acclaimed feature debut THE ORPHANAGE with this drama set during the 2004 Thailand tsunami, detailing one family's incredible fight for survival. Inspired by actual events, THE IMPOSSIBLE finds Henry (Ewan McGregor), his wife Maria (Naomi Watts), and their three sons lounging poolside at a scenic Thailand resort following an eventful Christmas. But just as the family begins to forget their troubles and settle in for a relaxing tropical getaway, one of the worst natural disasters in modern history changes their lives in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, as shock gives way to abject horror, the devoted parents fight to protect their children, encountering scenes of heart-wrenching tragedy and experiencing acts of incredible compassion as the entire country is engulfed in chaos. Tom Hollander and Geraldine Chaplin co-star.

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The film is a remarkable visual achievement, made more affecting by the depth the actors bring to their characters."
"The key selling point is Bayona's ten-minute reenactment of the tidal wave and its carnage, which is brutal, visceral and without peer."
4 stars out of 4 -- "Here is a searing film of human tragedy....THE IMPOSSIBLE is one of the best films of the year."
"Bayona achieves a rare sense of balance between the big and the powerful as well as the small and the intimate in the family's survival against impossible odds..."
Los Angeles Times
"THE IMPOSSIBLE plunges the audience into the catastrophe and then immerses us in the panic, grief and disorientation of the aftermath."
New York Times
"The catastrophic nature of the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean that opens the fact-based drama THE IMPOSSIBLE is rendered with nightmarish realism by Spanish director J.A. Bayona..."
"THE IMPOSSIBLE confirms that Bayona is a major talent, with a skill for constructing sequences that build tension as masterfully as Steven Spielberg did in his 70s heyday."
"[I]ts visceral force is more aggressive, its emotions cut deeper and its intelligence makes fiercely affecting work of close-to-the-bone material."
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "THE IMPOSSIBLE is a nimbly acted drama that is at once a stellar visual achievement and a life-affirming story of familial love and courage."
"[T]he painstaking realism is purposely unforgiving."
